Myongji Hospital builds Korea’s 1st all-around home treatment system to combat Omicron

Myongji Hospital said it has become the first hospital in Korea to provide non-face-to-face, visiting simultaneously, and outpatient treatment for at-home Covid-19 patients, establishing a comprehensive home treatment system to combat the Omicron variant.

Myongji Hospital Chairman Lee Wang-jun (fifth from left), along with other hospital workers and guests, cuts a ribbon to dedicate the outpatient treatment center for at-home Covid-19 patients at the hospital in Goyang, Gyeonggi Province, on Thursday.

Myongji Hospital's outpatient treatment center for at-home Covid-19 patients, which opened on Thursday, transfers at home Covid-19 patients who need on-site treatment due to persistent symptoms or difficulty identifying symptoms through non-face-to-face treatment to the hospital and receive outpatient treatment with doctors.

Using a park in the hospital completely separated from the main building not to overlap with general patients, the at-home treatment outpatient center consists of two mobile clinic modules (MCM), negative pressure outpatient clinics, and radiography rooms.

The MCM installed in Myongji Hospital is the latest third-generation model developed by Korea Advanced Institute of Sci8ence and Technology (KAIST), which can carry out central monitoring of negative pressure and ventilation, and has individual toilets in all rooms and wards with interlocks applied.

Of the two MCM's, the hospital uses one MCM ward as a short-term inpatient room for two patients needing oxygen treatment, and the other for treatment and the administration of Regkirona, Celltrion's Covid-19 antibody therapy.

In the treatment room installed outside the MCM, the hospital plans to perform face-to-face treatment with a doctor and blood tests and the independent radiography room for X-ray examination.

To use the home outpatient treatment center, citizens must use a private consignment ambulance, quarantine vehicle, or quarantine taxi contracted by local governments.

Myongji also plans to transfer patients who develop abnormal symptoms during treatment at the outpatient treatment center to a Covid-19 treatment-dedicated hospital, while patients who show no aggravation of their symptoms will return to the original home treatment.

"We pride ourselves on being the standard for home treatment, as we can provide various systems, such as non-face-to-face home treatment, visiting treatment, and outpatient treatment systems," Myongji Hospital Chairman Lee Wang-jun said. "We have established a triple track healthcare system that separates movement and space on top of our dual-track system that separates the existing corona-related treatment and general patient care."
