Myongji Hospital said it received the "American Hospital Association Excellence Award for Healthcare Workers" award for its "RISE (Resilience through Individual and Systematic Empathy)" program during the 2022 International Hospital Federation (IHF) Congress held in Dubai, the UAE, on Thursday.
The award is given to hospitals that provide excellent welfare to medical workers.
Myongji Hospital developed the RISE program to prevent burnout and psychological breakdown of hospital staff including doctors and nurses during the Covid-19 pandemic.
As part of the program, the hospital formed the "Covid-19 Blue Healing Support Team," consisting of 11 hospital units, including the neuropsychiatry department, rehabilitation medicine department, nurse station, and administrative team.
Also, the hospital continuously checked the psychological state of employees through psychological investigations, one-on-one psychological counseling, and monitoring, and developed and applied customized treatment methods based on the data.
Notably, Myongji provided special psychological support programs, such as hobby classes and concerts, stress-relieving meditation sessions, and music therapy videos, for physicians and nurses treating Covid-19 patients.
According to the hospital, all indicators including stress (52.5 percent to 37.4 percent) and fear (68.8 percent to 52.5 percent), difficulty in controlling anxiety (19.1 percent to 10.5 percent) have significantly improved.
Also, the nurse turnover rate decreased from 27.4 percent in 2019 to 24.9 percent in 2021.
During the IHF congress, Myongji Hospital Chairman Lee Wang-jun spoke on how an epidemic will change the future and presented the organizational normalization strategy of the hospital in the post-Covid-19 era.
"When everyone was focusing on Covid-19 quarantine strategies, Myongji Hospital has been contemplating and working hard not only for hospital quarantine measures but also for ‘psychological quarantine’ of our employees," Lee said during his presentation. "Myongji Hospital will continue to create opportunities in the midst of the Covid-19 crisis."
