Myongji Hospital has published a study, which calls for hospitals to manage respiratory symptoms intensively until four weeks after Covid-19 infection, and take a multidisciplinary treatment approach four weeks after the onset of complex symptoms.

A

Myongji Hospital research team, led by Professor Jung Young-hee, has published Korea’s first analysis of long Covid symptoms.

A hospital research team, led by Professor Jung Young-hee of the Department of Neurology, concluded so after comparing the symptoms of 1,122 patients who visited its Long Covid Clinic for a month from March.

The research team divided the patients into an acute sequelae group (675) within four weeks and a post-acute sequelae group (447 people) for four weeks or more and conducted a retrospective cross-sectional study based on questionnaires and medical records.

The team based its classification on the European Society of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases (ESCMID) criteria, which classified post-acute Covid-19 and long Covid at four and 12 weeks after diagnosis.

As a result, the team found that respiratory-related symptoms mainly appeared within four weeks of infection by Omicron, while the prevalence of other non-respiratory-related symptoms, including fatigue, decreased attention, depression, decreased visual acuity, hair loss, and sexual dysfunction rose higher after four weeks.

Notably, the team found that cardiopulmonary symptoms accounted for the most symptoms at 95.2 percent, followed by systemic symptoms (73.4 percent), neurological symptoms 67.8 (percent), psychiatric symptoms (45.7 percent), and digestive symptoms (43.6 percent).

However, for common symptoms among groups, cough accounted for the symptoms with 78.9 percent, followed by sputum (74.2 percent), fatigue (66.2 percent), dyspnea (51 percent), and systemic weakness (49 percent).

The post-acute group showed an average of 4.2 multi-symptoms, higher than the 3.9 multi-symptoms reported in the acute group.

Also, through multiple regression analysis, the team discovered that the number of accompanying symptom categories and sub-symptoms increased in older patients with Covid-19 sequelae and with severe depression, anxiety, or fatigue.

“In the early stages of the sequelae, respiratory symptoms caused by infection with Covid-19 were concentrated, but from then on, various complex symptoms appeared according to various mechanisms,” Professor Jung said. “If the sequelae symptoms persist for more than four weeks, a multidisciplinary approach to treatment is essential.”

The research results were published in the July edition of the Journal of Korean Medical Science.
