Myongji Hospital expands operation of long covid clinic
Myongji Hospital has expanded and reorganized its long Covid clinic by introducing a system to treat both subacute Covid-19 patients and those released from quarantine but suffering from aftereffects.
Myongji Hospital in Goyang, Gyeonggi Province, has expanded its Covid-19 Sequelae Clinic to treat subacute patients and patients suffering from aftereffects after release from quarantine.
According to the analysis of patient visits for a week after the hospital opened the clinic on March 21, people visited it most frequently the next day after they finished at-home treatment, the hospital said on Tuesday.
Ninety-five percent of visitors were patients who complained of symptoms within one month of release from quarantine, and 28 percent, within a week.
The most common symptom complained by patients who visited the clinic was cough in all age groups. About 68 percent of patients who visited the clinic in the first week of opening the clinic complained of coughing, followed by gastro and esophageal diseases, general weaknesses, dyspnea, bronchitis, and headaches.
By age, patients in their 60s accounted for 30 percent of the total, followed by those in their 50s (22 percent) and 40s (15 percent). By gender, women accounted for 63 percent of the total visits.
Accordingly, Myongji Hospital, located in Goyang, north of Seoul, changed its outpatient treatment protocol to focus on long covid treatment and subacute patients whose symptoms persist even after self-isolation.
As the number of patients requiring immediate inpatient treatment after the release of quarantine increases, the hospital established a new Covid-19 Subacute Care Unit (CSU), allowing patients with subacute symptoms to receive intensive care for three to five days at the hospital.
The hospital noted that it would operate separate CSUs for adults and children.
“Many patients who visit the clinic did not receive treatment during self-quarantine but want treatment for symptoms that remain after their quarantine is officially over,” Myongji Hospital Covid-19 Sequelae Clinic Director Ha Eun-hye said. “Therefore, the hospital operates a dual-track treatment system that provides treatment for these subacute diseases and typical aftereffects.”
