Myongji Hospital to develop Covid-19 manual for N. Korean doctors
Myongji Hospital said Thursday that it has set about to develop an inter-Korean medical cooperation model, through producing a manual suitable for responding to the coronavirus pandemic in North Korea.
The Goyang municipal administration, just north of Seoul, recently chose the hospital as the joint operator of the “2020 Inter-Korean Cooperation Fund Support Project.”
The hospital said it is stepping up efforts to find the appropriate inter-Korean medical-cooperation model by developing manuals and education programs for Covid-19 and other infectious diseases for North Korean medical workers.

The cooperative project also pushes for researching the medical system in North Korea regarding infectious diseases, developing manuals for responding to new infectious diseases, publishing a mini-medical dictionary, and developing common technical terms. It also calls for developing pandemic educational programs online and offline, led by Professors Hwang Sang-ik, Lee Ki-deok and Kang Yu-min at the hospital.
The hospital will make the manual for North Korean doctors based on South Korean manuals and those made by the U.N., some developing countries, and Doctors Without Border, creating the most suitable model in North Korea’s environment. The participants will use North Korea’s medical terms and produce the proposed manual in various forms, such as video clips, pamphlets, and computer files.
“There is an urgent need to develop a manual for North Korea based on the K-quarantine model,” Myongji Hospital Chairman Lee Wang-jun said. “Many medical professionals here are concerned about the North's situation that resorted to only border closure in responding to Covid-19.”
Lee stressed that the development of Covid-19 manuals, medical dictionaries, and educational programs regarding infectious diseases would serve as a stepping stone for promoting inter-Korean exchanges and cooperation in the medical field.
