Myongji Hospital’s 2-track Covid-19 responses get global recognition
Myongji Hospital's Dual Track Healthcare System (DTHS), which successfully separates Covid-19 patients from general patients for simultaneous treatment, has won favorable evaluation from foreign academic circles.
Journal of Hospital Infection, the official publication of Healthcare Infection Society, published the hospital’s paper, "Providing essential clinical care for non-Covid-19 patients in Seoul metropolitan acute care hospital amidst ongoing treatment of Covid-19 patients," on Oct. 1.
The Journal of Hospital Infection has published a study on Myongji Hospital’s Dual Track Healthcare System, jointly conducted by Chairman Lee Wang-jun and its professors, including Lee Ki-deok (photo).
Chairman Lee Wang-jun and a group of professors at Myongji Hospital have jointly conducted the study.
According to the paper, Myongji Hospital, a nationally designated hospital for Covid-19, saw a decreased number of general patients, as it focused on treating coronavirus patients. However, the number of severe and emergency patients did not decline, and the level of care has even improved, it said.
Myongji Hospital said that it has maintained the level of care for emergency and severely ill patients during the Covid-19 pandemic thanks to its operation of DTHS, which the hospital had preemptively prepared and implemented right after confirming the first Covid-19 patient.
DTHS, the core response strategy of Myongji Hospital, distributes Covid-19 patients and those without the virus at a two to eight ratio and provides the treatment.
Myongji Hospital has separated patients at an independent building, distributed and managed medical workers, including doctors, operated buffer zones to prevent infection within the hospital, performed 24-hour reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction test, and communicated with all medical staffs.
The Healthcare Infection Society is an academic network formed in 1979 with leading hospital infection experts from each country. Many countries refer to the studies published in the Journal of Hospital Infection to establish their hospital-acquired infection policies.
"Our response strategy based on the experience accumulated while responding to the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome has been considered successful from the early stage of the Covid-19 outbreak," said Professor Lee Ki-deok, the first author of the study. "We have gained increased trust from general patients even during the pandemic by completely separating them from those with the Covid-19 virus."
DTHS allowed seriously-ill and emergency patients to visit Myongji Hospital with confidence because the institution maintained and improved key functions, including rapid tests, buffer zone, and negative pressure rooms, Lee added.
