Myongji Hospital builds integrated Covid-19 home treatment system

Myongji Hospital said Tuesday that it has established an integrated system for Covid-19 home treatment to help asymptomatic or mild patients screen, test, and treat themselves without hospitalization.

A physician of Myongji Hospital conducts an online check-up at the hospital's MJ Virtual Care Center in Goyang, Gyeonggi Province.

The hospital, a designated Covid-19 medical institution, has been making all-around responses to the pandemic, operating a respiratory fever clinic, a test center, beds for severe patients, and isolated wards. Recently, the hospital has also been designated as an institution for managing the home treatment of patients in cooperation with the local government.

Since the designation by Goyang City, north of Seoul, the hospital started health management and treatment through virtual care service for mild and asymptomatic patients without hospitalization in line with the government's expansion of the "live-with-covid" system, according to the hospital.

Myongji hospital uses a mobile app dedicated to the MJ Virtual Care Center and the Ministry of Health and Welfare's non-face-to-face treatment system.

The hospital explained that the MJ Virtual application and the ministry's system make it possible to conduct various jobs, such as pre-selection of home treatment candidates, regular health monitoring twice a day, a 24-hour management system, non-face-to-face treatment, and issuance of prescriptions, mental health evaluation, and management of mental health high-risk groups.

Also, when the patient's health condition is abnormal, the hospital allocates a bed, requests a transfer to the public health center, determines whether to release the patient receiving home treatment, and remove them from quarantine, the hospital said.

"Myongji Hospital faces a shortage of medical staff due to the operation of a screening clinic, a living treatment center, and exclusive treatment for severe Covid-19 patients," said Suh Yong-seong, head of Myongji Hospital's Planning Department. “However, since home treatment also requires medical staff with experience in treating Covid-19 patients, the hospital decided to accept the role of home treatment manager as it has many experiences in the field.”

Suh stressed an urgent need for active cooperation from other regional hospitals to secure beds that quickly accommodate patients who need hospitalization during home treatment.
